When traveling in another country, you could easily get lost. Without a map or GPS, then how will you find your way? The best way is to ask a local for directions. So before you travel abroad, take a moment to review the basics of asking for directions in English. Remember: don’t be shy, just try!

在国外旅行时,你很容易会迷路。如果你没有地图或者GPS导航仪,怎么才能找到路呢?最好的方法就是向当地人问路。在你出国旅行之前,不妨花点时间来复习一下用英语问路的基础知识吧。记住:不要害羞,尽管尝试!

Let’s start with a common situation.

让我们从一个常见的场景开始吧。

Skit #1

Jordon: Excuse me. Where’s the bathroom?

Jordon: 打扰了。请问洗手间在哪儿?

Mike: Hmm, let me think. It’s upstairs on the second floor. Take the stairs, turn left and then it will be the first door on your left.

Mike: 嗯,让我想想。洗手间在二层。上楼梯,左拐,然后你左手边第一扇门就是了。

Toilet Tips

Everyone needs to use the toilet at some point. But not every country uses the same word. In the US and the UK, you could say “toilet” instead of “bathroom.” But in the UK, you could also just say “loo.”

上厕所是人之常情。但是并不是每个国家都用同样的词汇。在美国和英国,你可以用“toilet”来代替“bathroom”。在英国,你还可以说“loo”。

In China, you might hear someone say “WC,” meaning “water closet.” But in the US and the UK, this word is too old-fashioned for most young people to understand. So if you say it, then they might give you a funny look.

在中国,你可能会听人说“WC”, 这个词原意是“水箱”。但是在英美国家,这个词在年轻人看来已经太老套了。如果你还用这个词的话,他们会用奇特的眼光瞧你的。

Directions Advice

In fact, there are lots of ways to ask for directions.

事实上,有很多问路的方法。

1. Hi. Can you tell me how to get to Time Square?

你能告诉我去时代广场怎么走吗?

2. Excuse me. Where is the closest supermarket?

打扰了。最近的超市在哪儿?

3. Hello. I’m looking for the nearest subway station.

你好。我在找最近的地铁站。

Now let’s watch another clip to see if you’ve got it.

现在让我们再看另一段视频,看看你是不是掌握诀窍了。

Skit #2

Jordon: Hi! Can you please direct me to the nearest bus stop?

Jordon: 你好!你能告诉我最近的公交车站怎么走吗?

Mike: Eh, Sure. You just have to go straight to the next crossing. Then turn left. The stop will be right around the corner. You can’t miss it.

Mike: 当然可以。嗯,你要一直走到下一个十字路口然后左拐。它就在路口附近。你不会错过的。

Three tips about words and phrases often used to give directions

1. Basic patterns.

First, use basic English to offer directions. Short phrases are best. Speak slowly and use very careful pronunciation. Spell out a word if necessary. You can use this sentence pattern to start:

首先,使用基础英语来指引方向。最好用简短的语句。慢一点说,发音要清晰。如果有必要的话,拼读出单词。你可以从下面这个句型开始:

The easiest / easiest / best way is to…

最容易、最便捷的方式是…

And then connect with the following phrases:

接下来可以用这些词组连接:

go / head + right, left, down, up, through, north, south, east, west

朝右边、左边走,沿路一直走下去,穿过……, 朝北、南、东、西走

take + (road name)

走……路

turn + right, left

向左、右转

stay on + (road name) for + (distance or time)

在……路上一直走(一段距离或者时间)

For example:

例如,

The easiest way is to go down Main Street.

最方便的方法是沿着主街走下去。

The best way is to turn left on Central Avenue.

最好的路径是在中央大街左拐。

Stay on Route 66 and head north for about ten minutes.

沿着66号公路行进,然后向北走十分钟。

2. Smart transitions and prepositions.

Next, listen for “smart transitions.” The person you ask directions from might use a transition word or phrase to separate each leg of the route. This makes his or her instructions easier to understand. For example, you might hear them say:

接下来,注意听“智能转换词”。你问路的对象可能会使用一个转换词者短语来区分每段路程。这能让他或者她的指示更易懂。例如,你可能会听他们说到:after that, then, next, or when you get to…go…, and finally.

Sometimes people use numbers and distances that are guesses. For example:

有时候,人们还会使用估测的数字和距离。例如:

It takes a while.

这要花些时间。

It’s about a three-minute walk.

大约要走三分钟。

It’s about 5 miles south of here.

离这大约往南五英里。

You might also hear prepositions. They tell you how far away the place is. For example:

你也可能听到介词。它们能告知你目的地的距离。例如:

It’s opposite the post office.

它在邮局对面。

It’s near the Marriott Hotel.

它在万豪酒店附近。

It’s around the corner from the 7-11.

它在7-ELEVEN便利店附近。

3. Landmarks.

That leads us to the last point - landmarks. Landmarks are obvious or memorable structures, such as a tower or a restaurant, that help you determine your location. When giving directions, people often refer to local landmarks to help guide travelers. For example:

下面是最后一个要点——标志性建筑物。标志性建筑物是显要的或者容易记住的建筑,例如塔楼或者饭店。它们能够帮你确定地点。给人指路的时候,人们经常会提到当地的标志性建筑物来帮助游人。例如:

It’s across from the white church. You will pass a KFC restaurant on your right.

那地方就在白色教堂对面。你去那的路上会发现右手边有家肯德基餐厅。

Reminder about manners

Finally, when asking a stranger for directions, remember your manners. Always say excuse me, please and thank you. Also, don’t forget to smile and speak in a clear voice. That way, people will be more willing to help you find your way.

最后,当你向陌生人问路时,记得要有礼貌。一定要说“打扰了”,“请”和“谢谢”。还不要忘了面带微笑,吐字清楚。人们会更愿意帮你指路的。
