Date Cake

[*]2cupevaporated milk
[*]2tablespoonvinegar
[*]3 1/2cupflour, (14 ounces)
[*]2teaspoonbaking soda
[*]2teaspooncinnamon
[*]1teaspooncloves
[*]1/4teaspoonsalt
[*]1cupshortening, (1/2 pound)
[*]2cupsugar, (1 pound)
[*]2 eggs
[*]2pound pitted dates, (1 quart)
[*]2cupnuts, (1/2 pound)
Directions
[*]Mix evaporated milk and vinegar.
[*]Sift flour, then measure.
[*]Resift with other dry ingredients.
[*]Cream shortening.
[*]Add sugar and continue creaming until light and fluffy.
[*]Beat in the eggs.
[*]Add dry ingredients alternately with the soured milk, beginning and ending with flour.
[*]Add sliced dates and chopped nuts with last few stirs.
[*]Pour into 2 greased tube or loaf pans.
[*]Bake in a moderate oven (350f) about 1 hour.
