How do you hold your yarn for tension??

Hi, I’m not the most advanced at crochet, but I’ve done a few pieces here and there of different things. I am just very curious if anyone else here does not hold their yarn (tension purposes) like it is taught in books or YouTube videos. Ya know, like wrapping the yarn around your finger or between your fingers to create that tension you need to crochet. I know people don’t all hold their hooks the same, that for a fact I have seen different holds, not just knife or pencil. Yet, I’ve never seen someone teach someone else crochet while they hold their tension in a non “by the book” way.
I can for a fact say that how I hold my yarn for tension is odd, and I feel like it is a reason why I crochet slower and can’t advance in my speed. But every other way feel uncomfortable, I just wanna know if anyone else is the same.
